Airdrie Siding Replacement and Hail Repair

Airdrie has its own hail record, separate from Calgary’s. The August 2014 storm that only brushed Calgary struck Airdrie and the surrounding area, and the June 13, 2020 storm was reported across Calgary, Airdrie and Rocky View County. So an Airdrie home may carry siding that has already been through a round of storm repairs.

The Homes and Buildings in Airdrie

Airdrie became a city in 1985 and had about 74,100 residents at the 2021 census, and its newer communities include Coopers Crossing, Reunion, Ravenswood and Luxstone. Newer Calgary-region homes commonly carry vinyl on most walls with stone or fibre cement accents at the front, and that mix is what we expect to find until the walls tell us otherwise. The practical consequence of two recorded storms is that a single house can carry original panels, panels replaced after one storm and panels replaced after another, all weathered to slightly different shades.

Matching is the hardest part of hail work on that kind of house. Vinyl profiles and colours get discontinued, and weathered panels fade, so new panels may not match exactly. On fibre cement accents the rules are set by the manufacturer: small nicks in a ColorPlus finish can be touched up sparingly with James Hardie’s touch-up applicator, but larger damaged areas are replaced, and a new board may look slightly different beside a wall that has weathered for years. Sometimes repainting an elevation gives a better result than chasing a match.

Storm damage is rarely only skin deep. A holed or split panel lets water reach the weather barrier, and the City of Calgary’s climate-ready guidance, which applies just as well to Airdrie, advises having the barrier inspected, repaired or replaced when siding is replaced. Soft sheathing behind siding is almost always a water problem, such as a missing kickout flashing or a failed window flashing, and LP’s installation instructions are blunt that siding must not go on over rain-soaked or buckled sheathing. We fix the source before closing the wall.

Weather and Exposure

The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported that the August 7–8, 2014 hailstorm struck Airdrie and surrounding areas, brushing Calgary on its way and also hitting Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer. On June 13, 2020 the Bureau named Airdrie alongside Calgary and Rocky View County in the storm it called the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history at the time. The August 5, 2024 storm is not part of Airdrie’s record on this page: one university research account lists Airdrie among affected locations, while local reporting says the storm bypassed the city, and we do not claim either.

Airdrie is a little colder than Calgary in the building code’s climate table: 5200 heating degree-days against Calgary’s 5000, and a January design temperature of −32 °C against −30 °C. Both are in climate zone 7A, and both use the same 0.30 minimum ratio for foam insulation outside the sheathing. With a moisture index of 0.4, the code does not require a capillary break behind cladding in Airdrie.

A newer community where accent materials at the front deserve as much attention as the vinyl walls, because a chip exposes unfinished fibre cement, and James Hardie calls for every field-cut edge to be caulked, painted or primed.

Ravenswood

Newer homes where soffit and fascia on the same elevation as damaged siding are worth checking at the same visit, so one repair does not expose the next problem.

Permits in Airdrie

Authority having jurisdiction: City of Airdrie

The City of Airdrie, through its building inspections department, is the authority having jurisdiction, not the City of Calgary. Airdrie’s permits page says only that some projects may not need permits while others may require one or more, and we have not found a siding-specific statement from the City. So Airdrie’s building inspections department decides, and we confirm before starting. The provincial Permit Regulation is the background: it generally exempts re-siding with a similar type of siding, done for maintenance or appearance, where health and safety are not at risk and nothing structural changes. On a hail job that last condition matters, because sheathing or framing damage found during tear-off can turn a like-for-like replacement into something that needs a closer look.

Was Airdrie hit by the August 2024 Calgary hailstorm?

The sources disagree. A Western University research article lists Airdrie among affected locations, while a local news report says the storm bypassed Airdrie. We do not claim it either way. What is on record is the August 2014 storm, which struck Airdrie and the surrounding area, and the June 2020 storm, in which the Insurance Bureau of Canada named Airdrie. If your siding is damaged, the wall itself is the evidence that counts.

My Airdrie home has mismatched panels from earlier repairs. Can you make it look like one wall again?

Usually, but not always by patching. If the original profile and colour are still available and close enough, we replace the odd panels.
